Historical Marker Dedication Success

Marker photo with Lois Huntington

It was certainly a day to remember for members of the General de Lafayette Chapter.  The unveiling of the beautiful DAR-sponsored marker at the Buddell Sleeper house on Saturday, June 2, 2018, was well worth the wait.  The crowd was stunned by the beauty of the marker as it was unveiled by chapter historian Kathy Cox and her granddaughter, Kylie Cox, direct descendants of Buddell and Betsy Sleeper.

Kathy organized the community event that began at Farmers Institute Meeting house where Buddell and Betsy Sleeper and his family worshipped.  Dr. Thomas Hamm, Professor of History from Earlham College, presented an insightful historical address as the keynote speaker.  State Regent Lois Huntington also participated in the program by brining her greetings on behalf of Indiana DAR daughters.

The keepsake program, written and designed by Kathy, includes an embossed cover, along with several pages of historical photographs, and a written history of the house and underground railroad activities that occurred there.

An updated second edition printing of the booklet is now available, and it includes photographs from the event.
